As an intermediate school district, the decision to close schools is complex and the safety of our students and staff, especially those waiting at bus stops, is always the most important factor we consider when making the decision. We do not make the decision based on a specific temperature or snowfall benchmark, but rather assess a multitude of factors including temperature, wind chill, amount of snow, road conditions and geography. The National Weather Service (http://www.weather.gov) is our source of weather data used for making this decision.
Northeast Metro 916 will closely monitor weather conditions and make a decision regarding school closures as early as possible. In the event of a school closing, families will be notified through:
- For all Special Education programs, Treatment Programs, Area Learning Centers (ALCs), and the Career and Technical Center, the identifying district on WCCO will be Northeast Metro #916.
- For Valley Crossing Community School, the identifying district will be Valley Crossing.
Families Have a Choice
- District Website - An announcement will be posted to our district website (www.nemetro.k12.mn.us) under "News" and at the "School Closings and Alerts" link.
Parents/guardians always have the option to keep their child(ren) at home if they feel conditions are unsafe. We make the best decision we can for the district, but we respect a parent/guardian’s assessment of what is best for their child(ren). If a family chooses not to send their child(ren) to school, they should report the absence to the school office and the absence will be excused. Employee Information
