Shelli Sowles receives 2016 Career Guidance Award

Sowles The Minnesota Association for Career and Technical Education (MnACTE) on August 12 awarded Shelli Sowles the ACTE/Region III Career Guidance Award for 2016.

Sowles, who serves as the college and career readiness specialist at Northeast Metro 916’s Career and Technical Center (CTC), was selected from among candidates throughout Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. The award recognizes guidance counselors and career development professionals who have made significant contributions to advocate, educate and communicate the value of career and technical education as a viable career option to a variety of audiences in their communities.
At Northeast Metro 916, Sowles helps students align their talents to their interests. “I believe my role is to enhance a student’s high school experience by bringing meaningful experiences that help ignite a deep desire for future leadership, learning and success,” she said. “That is what drives me in my daily work.”
Partnering with Century College is also a key part of Sowles’ job.  She works closely with the college’s career counseling staff to plan and implement effective career and college readiness programs for CTC students.  “I have seen [Shelli] work with and lead students in such a way they see their potential, abilities and future careers,” said Carrie Hageman, career services director at the college. “She is a team member . . . one that I have relied on and valued tremendously.”
Sowles will compete against four other regional winners for the national ACTE 2016 Career Guidance Award at the ACTE Career Vision Conference in Las Vegas to be held November 30 to December 3, 2016.  She will also be recognized at the upcoming Minnesota Career and Technical Education CTE Works Conference on November 16, 2016 in Bloomington, Minnesota.
